As noted in WB No. 284 in the article accompanying Ben Fuller’s “The Maine Peapods,” David Cockey has been conducting an ongoing study to compare the shapes and performance characteristics of a variety of these classic double-ended Maine workboats.

From 1906 to 1913, the boats of the German Sonder class competed in international regattas organized to foster friendship among various countries—and particularly between the United States and Germany. These contests, described in WoodenBoat No. 284 (January/February 2022) resulted in more than 100 American-designed and -built Sonder boats.


WANDERER III charges along in the notorious “Furious Fifties” region of the South Atlantic in 2011 en route from South Georgia to Tristan de Cunha. The rugged 30′ Laurent Giles-designed sloop has sailed more than 300,000 miles in her 65 years and is still going strong.
