Tern is a lengthened (to 23'9') version of my earlier 20' design Ratty.
The design of the boat comes by request of a customer who already owns a Charles W. Wittholz’s catboat and wanted to have a beautiful tender for his yacht.
These handsome, practical row boats were routinely built by Nova Scotia shipwright, Jim Smith in six days, painted and ready for the water.
If we have to base ourselves on market demand before 2008, the two daysailers that we propose are very small. At that time, generally characterized by a continuous increase in boat size, it seemed as though a daysailer could not be less than 12 m, (even better if it exceeded 15 m).
I originally designed this kayak for a customer with a lake house in Wisconsin. He is a fit, athletic guy with almost no experience in a kayak. He wanted something he felt comfortable in, yet which would move along nicely.
