Seminar: The Art & Life of Winslow Homer

The Hull Lifesaving Museum’s 8 week seminar (Fridays, 10-11:30 a.m.), The Art & Life of Winslow Homer, will provide an in-depth understanding of one of America’s most beloved artists. From Homer’s early work as an illustrator during the Civil War, to his iconic paintings that capture the essence of the New England coast, we will examine Homer’s work in the context of both American cultural history and the art of the period. Sessions will take place in the historic boatroom of the Point Allerton US Lifesaving Station, and will draw on the Hull Lifesaving Museum’s collection of 19th century prints and maritime artifacts. Seminar will include a field trip to view original works by Homer in Boston area collections.

Instructor Victoria Stevens, Executive Director of the Hull Lifesaving Museum, holds a BA in Fine Arts from Harvard University and a MA in Art History & Museum Studies Certificate from Tufts University. She began her career while working as a student at the Fogg’s Center for Prints, Drawings and Photographs and completed graduate internships at the Peabody Essex Museum and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston before joining the staff of the Hull Lifesaving Museum in 2001.
