Lewes Family Boat Building Weekend

-

Lewes was a shipbuilding town from the 1600s until the mid-1800s, and hundreds of vessels of all sizes were built on Lewes Creek. Join the Lewes Historical Society as it rekindles this art in Lewes as part of its Family Boatbuilding Weekend over Father’s Day weekend.

Participating groups and families will build wooden boats called Bevin skiffs, with help from the Lewes Boatbuilding Volunteer Crew Friday through Sunday, June 14-16, in front of the Lewes Life-Saving Station. At roughly 12 feet long and holding about four passengers comfortably, these wooden boats are great for fishing and recreation. This design has been passed down over the years, and the organizers believe it to be a fitting vessel to replicate: a simple appealing design, that's easy to build.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, June 15, everyone is invited to the Lewes Lifesaving Station to view more than 16 wooden boats made by hobbyists.

After construction, the groups will launch their skiffs at Lewes Canalfront Park on Sunday, around 1 p.m.

Register your group to participate by calling 302-645-7670 or click for application; space is limited.
