China Camp Heritage Day

This year's event will feature musical and dance performances, calligraphy and origami, and educational displays. There will be arts and crafts for sale, with 20% of the proceeds going to help Friends of China Camp.

The GRACE QUAN, a replica Chinese junk, will be on display and the ALMA, a historic scow schooner, will arrive during the day.

Now a state park, a Chinese shrimp-fishing village thrived on this site in the 1880s. Nearly 500 people, originally from Canton, China, lived in the village. In its heyday, there were three general stores, a marine supply store and a barber shop. It is a particularly important year for this celebration, because there is no longer the threat of closure: the park will remain open.

Fisherman by trade in their native country, they gravitated to the work they knew best. Over 90% of the shrimp they netted were dried and shipped to China or Chinese communities throughout the US.  The museum at China Camp Village helps tell the story of these hardy shrimp fisherman.
