TOMBOLO 28

As featured in WoodenBoat issue #274, the Tombolo 28 is an iconic modern classic outboard-powered cruiser. The mission of the design dictates a maximum length under 30′ and a trailerable beam. This led to a concern with keeping the overall weight and horsepower to a minimum to meet a cruising speed of just under 20 knots. The Tombolo 28 hull form is an easily driven modified-V, low deadrise hull with a fine entry and long waterline. This hull design has been optimized for a single outboard motor in the range of 115 to 150 h.p. maximum, which will meet a cruising speed of just under 20 knots, and can be driven to 21-24 kts.The arrangement is geared towards a long weekend for a couple or a day cruise with your close friends. The layout features a large convertible outdoor space with a hardtop overhead for shade from the elements with a removable aft canvas enclosure. Down below is a large forward berth and lockers, and a head with standing headroom.Hull construction is 3/4″ western red cedar, fastened to solid fir chines, and a stem laminated from mahogany. The bottom and topsides are finished inside and out with a sheathing of fiberglass fabric and epoxy with additional reinforcement over the chine and keel. There is a laminate option in the plans using either unidirectional ’glass or carbon fiber that offers significant additional stiffness and strength. The cambered raised foredeck, house sides, and deck sole will be cut from plywood and set in place. The headroom bubble forward of the windshield is strip planked over a temporary form and 'glassed over. The interior is built much like the exterior furniture, in simple light painted plywood. The plans include a .dxf file containing outlines of the hull and hardtop mold frames, hull mold strongback, stringers, bulkheads, and house sides. Developing these CNC outlines was very time consuming, however, these parts can be CNC cut, resulting in significant labor savings for the builder. Plans consist of seventeen sheets (24 x 36″) with detailed dimensioned views.
