PENNY

This is the 3-D concept drawing and design profile featured in Design Sketchbook in WB No. 270, September/October 2019.

PENNY’s warped hull shape has deep-V sections forward and flatter ones aft, but for the sake of comfort and speed she is deeper than her predecessor about one third of the way aft of the bow.

Particulars:

  • LOA: 19′ (5.80 m)
  • LWL: 17′11″ (5.47m)
  • Beam: 6″4″ (1.93m)
  • Draft: 11″ (0.28m)
  • Displacement: Salt water, half-load 1,808 lbs (820kg), Light vessel approx 1,100 lbs (499kg)
  • Prismatic coefficient: 0.68
  • D/L ratio 140
  • Outboard 50-hp four-stroke gas

The curving hard dodger matches the hull’s retro styling. The bow line and anchor may be handled from the safety of the forward cabin hatch.

The transition of a flared bow to a tumblehome transom requires careful design to avoid hard spots; a gradual blending of highlights and shadows indicates a fair hull.
