PHANTOM

The plans for this racing catboat were published in a two-part, how-to-build article in The Rudder (Dec. 1902 and Jan. 1903) from which designer Charles D. Mower expected that  “...any amateur with a fair amount of practical knowledge and mechanical ability should be able to turn out a perfectly satisfactory boat.” The design features long overhangs both fore and aft, a fad at the time that allowed one to beat the waterline length rules. As such, PHANTOM is 12' on the waterline and has a 6' beam but is 18' 4" overall. She carries 231 square feet of sail with two reef points and has hollow spars. Her approximate dry weight is 600 lbs.PHANTOM came into my pocession as a “free boat” in 1986. She need substantial reframing as well as new stem, spars, sails, and centerboard trunk. She was rebuilt and featured in WoodenBoat’s Launchings section. Recently she has undergone a second phase of work including a new deck and transom, floorboards and fresh paint. I am looking forward to traveling with her to some new inland lakes to sail in for the 2019 season.
