UNDA - 1949 Aage Utzon Ketch - 40' double ender

Unda is a double-ended cruising ketch custom designed in 1938 by Aage Utzon, the Danish naval engineer and father of the Sydney Opera House architect, Jørn Utzon. She was built after World War II and launched in 1949 by Egon Nielsen Boatyard in Nakskov, Denmark. She is a heavy, seakindly boat built for the North Sea. Typical of Danish construction, she is a dry boat with an unusually large and deep cockpit. It has been said that the Danes like a deep cockpit because of the old Nordic maritime superstition of protecting one’s kidneys: “man skal passe på nyrerne” (take care of your kidneys).

Unda was purchased by Dean Gurke in 2004, then underwent extensive restoration. She was relaunched in March 2005 in time to win her division in the Master Mariner's Regatta in San Francisco Bay. In 2022, the current owner inherited Unda from Dean and has been looking for a worthy steward to pass her on to. 

Unda has been to Mexico and back twice, cruised the Pacific Northwest extensively, and traveled the Inside Passage up to Alaska and back to the San Juans. It is hard to let her go – for all the sentimental connections, for her impressive pedigree, for her seaworthiness, for her cruising and racing ability, and most of all, for her magical charm.
