The 2019 Mahurangi Regatta

Twenty or so miles north of Auckland, New Zealand, lies Mahurangi Harbour, where the river of the same name widens before emptying southeastward into Whangaparaoa Bay. This is the site of the Mahurangi Regatta, which heralds itself as “the Southern Hemisphere’s largest meet of classic wooden boats.”

From the early 1880s through the 1910s, the development of the “electric accumulator,” or rechargeable battery, made the widespread use of electric power a serious contender for vehicles, including boats.

Sharpie Madness

Although I’ve always thought of myself as more or less immune to the influence of advertising, certain books have had a definite impact. Back in the mid-1980s, one such book even prompted me to violate that cardinal rule of boat selection: buy only a boat suitable for your local waters. Years ago, my local waters morphed from the shallow depths of New Jersey’s Barnegat Bay, which is perfect for centerboard catboats, to the rocky but deep waters around Marblehead, Massachusetts.
